  • I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON THE FAMILY OF PERRY HYDE, BORN IN LAUREL COUNTY, KY IN 1825. HE MARRIED ELIZA TYLER AROUND 1849 OR 1850 AND THEIR FIRST SON, FRANCIS MARION, WAS BORN IN MISSOURI. THEY LEFT MISSOURI IN 1851 ON A WAGON TRAIN BOUND FOR THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY IN OREGON.

    • Colleen, I’m about to send you an email, if you don’t receive it today 2/19 please contact me (contact info on website). I believe he was Oliver Perry Hyde, son of Oliver Perry Hyde and cousin to Richard Starkey Hyde, who was b VA, d Chariton County, MO. Naming convention of Revolutionary War or naval heroes. Perry and Liza eloped without her parents consent and there was a bit of a coverup that resulted in some erroneous genealogy.

  • To the author of this website I really need to thank you now, I can trace back my ancestors. Thank you my name is Ryan Hyde and I am honored that you took the time to do this.

      • hello me and my aunt are doing a family tree and we are tracing back our heritage we have traced so far back to Canada and Scotland

        • Ryan, my name is Michael Hyde. My Great-great-grandfather was James Hyde (1814-1861). He and his wife, Agnes Clark (1824-1889) emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to Montreal, Quebec in June 1853. They had twelve children – – nine surviving infancy. I have a large family tree on Ancestry.com called “Hyde Boronow Irvine Shaw”. I have many Hyde family relatives in Canada. I would like to compare notes if you want to get in touch.

        • Ryan, we’re happy to assist. Please let us know your furthest, confirmed on paper, Hide/Hyde ancestor, their spouse’s name – even a first name is helpful – and approximate dates and location. You can email us directly if you prefer.

  • Hi
I’m trying to trace 3 generations of Onesiphorous Hyde who was from Dorset in England and said to have travelled to the US in 16th or 17 th century . Onesiphorous Hyde no . 1 born in 1690 married Elizabeth Horwell . Their son Onesiphorous born 1720 . His son Onesiphorous born 1749 . They may have been from Milborne Port in Sherborne, Dorset or surrounding area. I’m trying to confirm if any of them travelled to the US . This is the family rumour . My Great grandmother was Agnes Hyde daughter of William Hyde . All from the same area and struggling to link them to Onesiphorous Hyde family . Any help would be very much appreciated.

    • Sarah, you have a wonderful genealogical situation here in that Onesiphorus/Onesephorus/Onisiphony Heyde/Hide/Hyde turns up quite a bit, but needs to be untangled. The America story might have come about as a result of generation 3 or 4, of Abbas Combe, Somerset. This Onisiphorus spent some time in the Ilchester, Somerset gaol but was not transported. I’m coming up with different parents for generation 1, although Roger Hide/Hyde and Ann Chiles did spend time in Cerne Abbas, Dorset. A professional genealogist could have this sorted in about 2-3 hours, because the records are all there, but it’s painstaking work to capture and sort them all, and the online trees have entries that don’t match the records. My recommendation is to hire a professional, because there are records that go back further than 1st gen Onesiphorus, so I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. If you want to provide more information about Agnes, daughter of William, I can see if she ties into this line. Feel free to email me, it’s on our contact page.

      • Hi Ann
Sorry only just saw reply !
So Agnes Hyde b 1862 Sherborne,Dorset , father William Hyde b 1835 Milborne Port , his father Charles Hyde b 1811 Milborne Port , his father William Hyde b 1779 Milborne Port, his father William Hyde 1739, his father Joseph 1710, his father Joseph 1688 his father Arthur Hyde b 1656. I am trying to see if an Onesiphorous Hyde is related through this line at all . I have looked at 3 lines of Onesiphorous but can’t find a connection yet . Hope this helps .
        Many thanks

        • You’re right, It doesn’t appear that there’s a link. There were other men named Onesiphorus in both Somerset and Dorset, so possibly the story connects to a different surname. As far as the question of an Onesiphorus Hide going to America in the 17th or 18th century, some person or legal entity would have had to cover the cost of his transport and that ought to have left a record. The records that I see for the Dorset family place them in England with, shall we say, great consistency.

        • Have you read the book by Peter Hyde, Hyde family of Milbourne Port? You are likely to find the link here. the later Peter Hyde was related to the Hyde’s of Milbourne Port, which I am also, but his line went to America in the time frame you mention. Good luck with your research. Best wishes, Karen Hyde

  • Hi Ann, I am also a GOONS member but haven’t yet got far along with my intended study. I recently broke down a brick wall and find I have Hydes ancestors in Leicestershire and possibly Lincolnshire. You don’t seem to have any lines for that area. Would be happy to supply further details if you’d care to contact me.

    • Julie, sending you an email. We don’t have many lines for England although I am working on one now that goes back to Anglo-Saxon times and involves the earliest Hydes.

    • Hey! I’m Amanda Hyde and my great grandparents were Robert & Annie Hyde, they were born in Leicester, thou often lived in Lincolnshire always farm labouring from town to town, Robert father was William Hyde and lived in Melton mow ray leicester.hope this is helpful!

  • I do not see information on my 7th great grandfather, Richard Hartwell, who I believe was born 1717 Surry, Virginia and died 1762 in Edgecombe, North Carolina. He was married to Mildred Hartwell (1720 Edgecombe, North Carolina and died 1795 Halifax, North Carolina. His will names sons Henry, Hartwell, and Lucas. Daughters named were, Anne, Letitia, Sophia, and Cheyney.

I descend from Richard through his son Hartwell who I believe married Mary Reavis. Their children were Letitia (my 5th great grandmother), Mary, Mildred, Sophia, Priscilla, Jincy Jane, Pheriba, Elizabeth and Hartwell Blount.

Letitia married William Spann before 1800 in North Carolina. Their children were Polly, Hartwell B. and William. They lived in the Spanntown Road area of Williamson County, Tennessee. I descend from Hartwell B. through his son, Benjamin Franklin “Roy” Spann who married Hiley Ann Decker in Wayne County, Kentucky in 1852. Their daughter, Margaret Jane Spann and Henry Granville Bryant were my 2nd great grandparents through their daughter, Eliza Jane Bryant, who married in 1905 in Menard Co., IL. Their son, Auburn Edward King was my grandfather.

    • Jeanette, this is the Richard Hyde “The Pirate” line. We’ve been discussing putting this in the next newsletter. Almost caught up with queries and ready to move forward on the newsletter.

      • I am also a descendant of the Richard Hyde “The Pirate” line, through Richard b 1717’s son Henry. Henry went to (what became) Middle Tennessee. There are cool pictures of his headstone online from the Hyde Cemetery in Davidson County, Tennessee. The Hydes established and ran a ferry over the Cumberland River that was called Hyde’s Ferry. There is a historical marker about Hyde’s Ferry Turnpike nearby. I am very interested in this family. One of Henry’s sons, Tazewell, had seven or so children, including my 3G grandmother, Ellen. At her widowhood, Ellen was probably the wealthiest woman in Middle Tennessee, from what I have heard. What I know so far is in my tree on ancestry.com at REESESPIECES2019. –Cathy

    • Millie Hartwell (1720-1795) married Richard Hyde IV (1717-1762). They are my 5GG.
I have their 8 children as
Anne Avent Hyde (1745-1803), Sophia (1747-?), Letitia (1750-1792), John Henry Hyde (1750-1812), Lucas Hyde (1755-?),
Cherry Hyde (1758-?), Hartwell Blount Hyde (1759-1833 and my 4GG). Hartwell Blount Hyde,s daughter Haley Jane “Jincy” Hyde 1792-1855) is my 3GG.

      • For the most part, this is correct. Richard Hide married Mildred Hartwell. Richard’s brother David Hide/Hyde was the one who married Mary Wilkins. I seem to recall that Richard’s daughter Anne married an Avent, rather than it being her middle name. Daughter “Cherry” is Cheney/Chaney, var spellings. Son Henry Hyde was the one who moved to Nashville, TN.

  • Hi! I am trying to find out any information you might have regarding my great, great grandfather, Patrick Hyde. He was born in Cork, Ireland September 29, 1839, and died February 10, 1920, in Ketchum, Idaho. He married Ann Greer March 18, 1886. They had 5 children — Mary Ellen, James, Florence, Thomas and William.

Mary Ellen Hyde, born June 9, 1887, in Idaho, is my great grandmother.

I believe Patrick Hyde arrived in America in 1852 and may have lived in Boston, MA. But I have no information about him until he married Ann Greer — he was 20 years older than she was. Unfortunately, Mary Ellen was the only one to have children. She only had one, Caroline Helen Smith, born March 4, 1908, who I believe was raised by Patrick and Ann. Mary Ellen died October 31, 1920.

Any direction you could point me in or information you could share would be greatly appreciated!

  • There’s a baptism record for a Patrick Hyde on 5 October 1839, at Youghal, Cork, father Florence Hyde and mother Ellen Ahern. This may be the correct record as it aligns with his known birthday of 29 Sept 1839 (most of the surviving baptismal records for any Patrick Hyde in 1839 occur prior to Patrick’s accepted birthdate so can be ruled out). The thing is, Patrick Hyde is a very common name in Ireland, and the facts about this particular Patrick Hyde are conflicted.

On Patrick’s death record, W.H.R (name difficult to discern, but s/he provided the information on the certificate), stated that Patrick’s father’s name was also Patrick Hyde and his mother’s name was unknown. That may simply be that the person who provided the information did not know Patrick very well. It would be a good idea to find out who WHR was.
According to the (2nd) marriage record of his daughter, Florence A. Eby, to Harmon Stockdale, her father was born “near Dublin”. Since Youghal and Dublin are not exactly close, even if we go by counties, it’s not clear what’s going on. There are many possibilities as to why she might have said this, and these range from it being accurate to her not being comfortable spelling Youghal, as Dublin would be an instantly familiar city to the clerk. Having a daughter named Florence is also a point in favor of Patrick’s parents being Florence and Ellen, but that’s circumstantial. There are indications that his father Florence Hyde of Youghal went by his middle name, so without records or elderly relatives to verify information, it’s still a coin toss.
I see where Patrick is thought to have come through Boston. He may have. The problem with that is the naturalization record on many of the online trees. Patrick James Hyde was a printer who took the oath of allegiance in Boston 15 Nov 1859, when he was 29 years old. He seems to have married a Catherine and died in MA. Charles J McCarthy and John Riley vouched for him. This Patrick came over at age 13 on the ship “North America” with a 12 year old Margaret Hyde. He said that he was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. So this would be unlikely to be Patrick Hyde of Idaho. There were many other Irish Hydes who came through Boston, so if Patrick had any other relatives who came to America, we could triangulate. His religion and his profession are equally important. I need to learn more about Idaho as a migration place, because it doesn’t fit what I know at the present time (although it’s gorgeous, one of my high school friends and one of my husband’s friends both chose to move there with their families in the past few years).
One final thought. Something that few professional genealogists in Ireland realize is that the surname “Hyde/Hide” is not exclusively a Northern plantation name nor a “Cork people” name. It’s one of the oldest surnames in Ireland, stretching back nearly a thousand years. Catholic records for Youghal Hydes go back quite a ways.

  • There are quite a few people near Crossville, TN with the name Hyder; also a Hyder Cemetery. Is this another form of the Hyde name or no connection to any of us Hyde’s?

    • Darlene, Hyder is a proto-Germanic topographical surname similar to Hyde but it evolved entirely independently in a number of different locations. It’s most common in Germany but I’m also seeing Elizabethan era references in England. TN has the largest concentration of Hyders in the US, and many descend from one of the earliest settlers, a Michael Hyder, son of German immigrant Hans Michael Heider/Hyder.

  • I am trying to continue my Hyde family heritage. I have come to a cross roads at my GG grandfather. #1, Is Jesse Hyde @ born 1800/02 per 1850, 1860 census township of Freinship, Allegany NY. Census info fits the age time line and name of James Hyde (my confirmed G Grand) born in either Maple town, Monongahela township, Hyde Greene County PA or Mapleton, Huntington County, PA. Census mentioned states birth place in NY, for Jesse and James. Later census for James states , father born PA, no name. Unknown is relationship father, son. #2 is Aaron Walters Hyde (1808/1893) born Greene County Township, Greene County, PA. My crossroad…….James Hyde married Hellen Medora Miner (Home in Vermillion, So. Dakota….children: Charles Nelson, David, Rosa E, Alice Cordelia, Francis Gates and my Granfather Fred James Hyde (son Oliver James Hyde, mother Alice Bessie Drapeau) and me Gerald (Jerry) Fred Hyde (mother Norberta (Bertha, Birdie) Reyna…….. I hope you can help. Thanks.

  • James Hyde was b 14 Apr 1842 in Monongahela, Greene County PA. Around 1870, in Iowa, he married Hellen Medora Miner, b 11 Aug 1851 Huron, Ohio, parents Nelson Preston Miner and Cordelia Gates. Newly married James and Hellen appear in the 1870 census in Subdivision 2, Clay Territory, State of Dakota. South Dakota Civil War pension application confirms James (and his older brother Aaron) Hyde enlisted 24th May 1862 by Capt Hanson in Lansing, Iowa. James served in the 16th Infantry, Company B, discharged 1865. 1856 Iowa state census shows James age 14 and his family at New Stand Post Office, Mallory Township, Clayton County, Iowa. The five or so Hyde families at New Stand PO are all part of the same extended family and migrated from Greene County, PA. There is a Jesse Hyde in the extended family. James’s father was Aaron Hyde, born 8 June 1808 in Greene County, PA, d 28 Nov 1893, Clayton County, Iowa. (Note that there are at least 4-6 Aaron Hydes in this extended family, one of whom b 1820 followed the Oregon Trail in 1848.) Aaron Hyde’s first wife, and James’s mother, was Phoebe Ann Harry, married PA about 1832, she died in Iowa 1847. Note that Aaron’s brother John Hansford Hyde (another overly repeated name in extended family), who went with him to Iowa, married Sara “Hannah” Harry in PA. James’s father Aaron’s second wife was Mary Ann Johnson, married 1847 in Iowa. Aaron Hyde’s father is James Hansford Hyde born PA approx 1775, who m 1805, Mary Walters (bc 1783 PA). James Hansford Hyde is the son of Samuel Hyde and Mary Rebecca Seaton of Greene County, PA.

Here’s where the disconnect occurs: Samuel Hyde of Greene County, PA is believed to be the eldest or more likely 2nd son of John Hyde and Lucy Hansford of York County, VA, who were married sometime before 1761. John only lists his six youngest children in his 1774 will, Elizabeth, Mary, Lucy, Charles, Robert and Rebecca. The immigrant ancestor for this line is generally thought to be Robert Hyde (d 1718) of Fellgate’s Creek, York County, VA although it was actually his father John who came over from England. There’s quite a bit of information about this family online, but the records that are necessary to tie Samuel of Greene PA to John of York VA are not online (although the Virginia Genealogical Society does have files on this family). Information may be available in several places in Virginia. Research needs be done (in order of most promising material) at the Rockefeller Library in Williamsburg, the Augusta County Genealogical Society Library, the Harrisonburg – Rockingham Historical Society, Swem Library at the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia Library. It’s going to be a while before I get a chance to do a writeup but there are several descendants working on making the PA – VA connection and it would be great to hear of their progress.

    • Thank you for coming back. This info confirms research that I and a friend have found. Thank you for the added info area I can search.

  • I am looking for information on the parents of Mary Ann Hyde, b. 1815 in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. Her parents were Thomas Hyde (b. about 1783 Stonehouse), and Ann Cratchly (b. about 1783 Stonehouse). Thomas and Ann were married in 1802 in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

    • Thomas, a clothworker, formerly a mill man, and wife Ann, both approx age 55, appear in the 1841 census at Stonehouse with children Sophia (30), Emilia (15), Thomas (13) and Eliza (5). Thomas and Ann were married 22 Aug 1802, #1962 at St Lawrence, Stroud by minister Benjamin Heming, witnesses John Butcher and Stephen Howell. Their twin daughters, Frances and Elizabeth, were bap at Stonehouse 17 July 1803. MaryAnn’s mother, Ann/e Cratchley was bap 1 May 1785 at St Lawrence, Stroud, parents Richard Cratchley/Catchley and Anne Hewett. Thomas Hyde was bap 11 July 1784 at Stonehouse, presumably St Cyril in Stroud, “base born son of Anne Hyde”, annotation she was of Stroud parish. At Stonehouse 17 June, 1791, bap of Robert, base born son of Anne Hyde. From here, the information may or may not be relevant and further research is needed. There was an Ann/e Hyde bap 4 Feb 1770 at St Lawrence, daughter of James Hyde and Sarah Pincott. On 11 Feb 1802, “Francis, son of Francis Hyde by his wife Anne Hyde, daughter of Littleton/Lyttleton Lowe”, was baptised in a private ceremony at St Lawrence. According to church records, he was rebaptised 2 October 1803. Littleton Lowe and his family were not of that parish and there seems to be nothing recorded for anyone similarly named in Gloucestershire. There was a Littleton Lowe/s in Aymestrey, Herefordshire who had a wife Ann Durand born 1770, and there is a christening record for their daughter Anne born 1800. Noted 1st June 1806, death of Francis Hyde of Stroud, aged 38 (born approx 1768). He was the first proprietor of the three horse Stroud to Bristol Coach. His widow Ann died approx 1 Dec 1807, aged 37. There is an obituary recorded for her that might or might not clarify her origins, citation here: “British Newspaper Archive, Family Notices,” database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLSH-PC23 : 19 April 2019), Francis Hyde, Late Of Stroud Proprietor Of The Bristol Coach in entry for Mrs Hyde, United Kingdom; records extracted FamilySearch and images digitized by FindMyPast; citing United Kingdom, 16 Dec 1807, The British Newspaper Archive.

  • Looking for my great-great grandfather William Hyde. Wanting to know where he was born/his parents as all I have heard is that he was an orphan. Born around 10/1893 in possibly Oxford, England or perhaps Ireland. Married Constance Russell (Born 8/1892) and raised 3 children in Oxford, England (Mary, G, Celia). Thanks!

      • Melissa, unfortunately, there’s no shortage of William Hydes or William George Hydes born in the UK in October sometime between 1893-96. All of the online trees that I’ve looked at (Family Search, My Heritage, Ancestry, etc.) show incorrect parents for William. There are 3-4  William George Hydes in Oxfordshire alone in that time period, and they all can be traced through military service and military/medical records, marriages, birth records and other documents that put them in particular locations. None, from what I’ve seen, are the correct William. None appear to be orphans or live in Wardington and that’s your starting point. Note that there was another William Hyde in Banbury, close to WGH but not related.
        *
There are only two records online that mention the correct WGH, and you most likely already have these: December 1920, #541 Church of England Banns for William George Hyde, bachelor of Wardington, Oxfordshire, and Constance Eveline D’Arcy Russell, spinster of Parish of Headington, Ox. One of the listings in the GRO has him listed as “Walter”. Constance’s parents were Frederick Charles Russell and Hannah Mary Cox, her family appears on 1901 census. Constance was in domestic service and appears on 1911 census as Constance Eveline “Daisy” Russell. The 1939 England and Wales Register DXBY shows schedule #308, address 21 Shotover Rd, Ox, William G Hyde, b 8 Oct 1894 or 1896, motor driver; wife Constance E born 29 Sep 1892/3, unpaid domestic; Gordon F Hyde born 18 Nov 1922, student. Celia M Hyde, “Russell” written in pencil, b 29 April 1926, at school. One travel document, a flight from London to NY in March of 1953, passenger Mrs Constance E D Hyde.
*Collaborating with family members and reaching out to those who’ve put up online trees may help you fill in details but won’t necessarily bring in the correct information about WGH. This is recent enough that you should be able to get birth, marriage and death records for William. You will need to pay for these, and make sure that you specify that you are NOT looking for copies of the indexes (which contain no additional information and can be found online via Family Search, Free BMD, Find My Past, etc.) but the actual records themselves.
        *
What I believe to be the correct death record for him appears to be not far from where his son was living at the time. (Too recent for me to provide details other than what is already mentioned.) England and Wales Death Index, William George Hyde, born 8 Oct 1893, death date 4th quarter (Oct-Nov-Dec) year 1976, Chelmsford, Essex. Vol 9 page 1758. This can be ordered from the Essex Record Office Website. For other records, I suggest contacting The Oxford Family History Center,  https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/leisure-and-culture/history/oxfordshire-history-centre/start-researching/family-history-oxfordshire/first-steps

  • Hello! I’m looking for a Hyde line from North Alabama. I have as far back as Henry Hyde who died in Tuscumbia 1860. He married Celia and had 2 children, Lewis and Harriet, followed by three Thomas Hydes then my dad and me.

    • Liz, I do have more information on Henry Hyde but don’t have time to write it up, other than to say that he did not come from England. He was in the War of 1812 for NC, not TN. He did not marry “Rebecca Celia Warren” – there was no such person. This is is a conflation of a different, completely unrelated Henry Hyde (Pirate line) of Northampton County, NC who married Rebecca Warren and moved to Nashville, Davidson County TN. We don’t know Celia’s last name at present. More when I can.

        • Liz, I have yours back to the immigrant ancestor, writing it up now. Henry of Tuscumbia needs a separate writeup because most of what’s been done to date confuses him with the other Henry. You’ll have to do a lot of filling in, because I believe Celia’s last name can be found in Onslow County records that are not available online, but possibly at one of the NC history/genealogy centers. The other thing that I would caution you about is that there are many assertions about this family that are based on Henry being confused with the other Henry Hyde of the pirate line. I don’t have evidence for marriages with the Miller family, so, for example William and Martha A’s daughter Annie Messenger Hyde might be related to Henry’s neighbor Asa Messenger. Which suggests that Martha A’s maiden name might not have been Miller. Rather than speculate, it’s best to keep it as unknown until evidence is found. Henry might have had a daughter named Caldonia, and she’s sometimes asserted to have married a Beasley. It’s not known where the evidence for her comes from, but when you look at the actual marriage record, that’s between Richard Beasley and Catharine Hyde, 16 Jan 1838 in Sumter County, AL, approx 150 miles away. There was an unrelated Hyde family in Sumter and Catherine is much more likely to have been a member of that family. More later today.

  • My Hyde family’s story is that 2 brothers came over about the time of the Mayflower.
One went north and one went south. I have heard this from several family sources.
I am on Ancestry. My tree is the Thomas Hyde Family Tree. I am the owner–Bonnie Hyde Davis.
I have been DNA tested as have my brother–Tom Hyde III.
Relatives I know for certain are my dad, Tom Hyde Jr, his dad, Perry Dalton Hyde(Ark.),
    William Hyde(Geo.–Ark), David Hyde(Alabama-Geo. I think).
I have gone back 22 grandfathers and am trying to verify them. So many trees are wrong on Ancestry, it is hard to be sure of DNA members. I am happy to share with other Hyde’s our unique family history. I’m going to Europe this summer to go to some towns in England, Ireland and Scotland (also Ogletree families).

    • Bonnie – I looked back at our 2018 correspondence. Online trees show your ancestry potentially goes back to the same George and his son David Hyde (R-M512 DYS448 Null) that Megan and others have asked about recently. The 448’s did come from England, and the earliest identified is George Hide born circa 1734 who appeared in Johnston County, NC in the 1750’s. If you have any male relatives who would be interested in taking a Y-DNA test, that would confirm that Perry Dalton Hyde is part of the 448’s, unfortunately what it could not tell us is precisely which one of the 448’s his father was. William Henry Hyde had what looks very much like a father/son relationship with Perry Dalton Hyde, and there are possibilities that could explain his absence in an earlier census. William H and his wife were also comfortable enough that they took in, and probably schooled, parts of the extended family whenever it became necessary. I’ve written a separate page concerning DNA testing. This is too far back for autosomal testing to work, but Y DNA would. The page on William Henry Hyde and his extended family is here: https://www.hydegenealogy.com/?page_id=1865 The DNA page is here: https://www.hydegenealogy.com/?page_id=1852 Ovr the next few weeks I’ll clean up the HTML and links, it’s a bit rough now but site overhaul is happening before the fall semester starts.

  • I’m curious about the name Hyde because my grandmother, Lina Hyde Robbins nee Wright; my mother, Frances Hyde Bracher nee Robbins; and my brother, Franklin Hyde Bracher, all have it for a middle name. They are all now deceased. Lina was raised in Renovo, PA, and relocated to Seattle, WA, via Vancouver, BC.

    • Art – Let’s walk through the data. Lina Hyde Wright, born 1882, married 3 June 1902 James Edward Robbins in Clinton, PA. Lina’s father was William K Wright and her mother was Belle Hyde (1858-1939). Belle’s parents were Samuel Clark Hyde (1822-1895) and Joanna Fidelia Chapin (1836-1902). Samuel’s parents were John Hyde (1792-1855) and Mary Carpenter (1793-1855). John Hyde was a descendant of William of Norwich and appears in the Walworth book on page 490, #4089 https://archive.org/details/hydegenealogyord01walw/page/n513/mode/2up?q=%22mary+carpenter%22

John and Mary Hyde and their family also appear in the 1850 census for Swanton, Franklin County, VT (“Hasa” is Horace): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DY79-WM?i=23&cc=1401638&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMC28-YN5 Here we see 6 of 7 of the children mentioned, except for Samuel Clark Hyde, which is strange, because he’s mentioned as living with his parents until approximately 1857. But this can’t be accurate, because he turns up in the 1860 census in PA https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GBSD-FKB?i=25&cc=1473181&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMX5C-11N and it’s clear that he’s lived in PA and been married for at least six years. What this means is that the person who provided information about this family to Reuben Walworth confused some of the dates. The 1850 census was taken on 25 July 1850. Daughter Mary Ann is pretty clearly single and Samuel C has already moved out. Searches under Sam/Saml, Sam’l and Hyde/Hide will turn up more information. Vermont Vital Records databases – Chittenden County, CT town or church records should turn up birth or baptism information. Walworth used primary sources and while they didn’t recall everything perfectly, their account of the family is consistent with existing records. John Hyde appears in the 1840 census for Milton, Chittenden, VT with nine children. John appears in the 1830 census for Colchester, Chittenden VT with parts of his and Mary’s extended family, twelve people total. This is also consistent with Samuel C Hyde’s military record, confirming his birth in Chittenden County as well as the account of the family given in the Walworth book.

The Walworth book also tells us that John’s father, William Hyde (1765-1828) was a Revolutionary War patriot. His profile with some source documentation is here https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/KC25-QM2 I use quite a few Family Search links when showing records, and the thing to keep in mind is that no source is infallible. It’s always important to look at where the source comes from and compare it with other records, because it’s very easy to make mistakes (myself included, this is why I encourage people to point out mine). William’s profile on Family Search has several issues. William would only have been 15 when the pay record on his profile was written, so it’s not clear to me that this applies to him. There’s also no documentation listed that his middle name was Waterman and his wife is listed as Sara Hazleton (confusing him with a later relative) instead of Sarah Stark, for which there’s ample documentation. William’s father Capt Jedediah Hyde had an impressive Revolutionary service record, and it would not surprise me if the person providing the information to Walworth was at least partially correct, that William assisted in some brief way, as so many did.

  • I’m trying to help my brother and sister in the search for their Hyde family ancestors. Most of what they know is from Harrison County, West Virginia. Their father was Orval Clyde Hyde born 1924 died 1949. Is there anyone that can help out or point them in the right direction?

    • Regina – The first thing that the three of you can do is create free logins on http://www.familysearch.org. I can supply the basic outline of the information, as this is one of the lines that we’re familiar with, but you should work together to get census records, birth and death information, military service information and so forth to fill in the story. Orval Clyde Hyde (1924-1949) was born in Dodderidge, WV. He married Mary Frances Mitchell 14 Aug 1944 in Harrison County, WV. Parents as listed on the marriage cert: Stella Kelley McKinney and Charles Hyde.
      *
We see Orval in the 1930 census living with his maternal Kelly grandparents. Marriage records and other historical and genealogical information can be found on WV culture and history website https://wvculture.org/research/archives-and-history-research-databases/
      *
Stella was Ethel Fay Kelly/Kelley (1907-1994) 1st husband m 27 Oct 1926 Noah McKinney, several children. 2nd husband m approx 1942 Elias Airon (var spellings) Patrick, several children.
      *
Orval’s father was Charles Francis Hyde (1904-1947) Charles’ parents Bryan/Byram/Byron/Bam Milton Hide/Hyde (1876-1939) and Arie Odell Hayes (1878-1944). Charles married 29 Jan 1926 Mollie B Shields, several children.
      *
Byram Hyde’s parents were Peter Hyde (1835-1910) and Margaret Ann Stout (1838-1879). From here we switch from Doddridge to Harrison County, Virginia (later WV). Peter’s parents were Daniel Hyde (1805-1875) and Mary Richards (1803-1884).
      *
Daniel Hyde’s parents were James Hyde, Jr ( – d 1812) and Catherine Hardman (1774-1867). James Hyde Jr’s parents were James Hide/Hyde Sr and Sarah unknown, among the earliest settlers of Hacker’s Creek, Mason (later Harrison) County, VA , which became West Virginia in 1863. Our writeup for them is here:  https://www.hydegenealogy.com/?page_id=534

I have not updated James Sr’s profile in some time and unfortunately, the person who managed it, Patrick Hyde, is deceased. If a family member is interested in taking over the reins, please let us know. I’m happy to email the unprocessed information to descendants upon request. It’s possible but unconfirmed that the first US surname variant, Whyde, originates with this family. There’s also a strong oral tradition of the family coming from England, however, Y-DNA from several descendants suggests that the family has genetic ties to the oldest Hyde family in Ireland, appearing in records from approximately the 13th century.

  • Hello sir I’m Josiah Hyde from Ghana west Africa ,please kindly Trace my ancestors so l can find my family please

    • Hi Josiah. We need more information to go on. Can you share the names of your grandparents or great grandparents, when and where they lived and the approximate dates when they were born?

  • Hi, my wife’s family tree includes a child, Ellen, born in Herefordshire in 1865 with father uncertain. She was variously given the surnames Edwards (from her mother, Betsey) & Beaumont (from her Aunt, Adelaide), but there is the suspicion that her father was Joseph Hyde, a cordwainer or bootmaker born in 1840 and living in the small village of Ullingswick in Herefordshire. The only ways to confirm this would be to find a Hyde family story or via DNA.

I have traced several of Joseph’s later children and grandchildren, and am still working on finding more. I was wondering whether anyone connected to this website might have more information about this branch of the Hyde family please.

    Thanks

    • Eric – Elizabeth Edwards and Joseph Hyde did have a child together, Joseph Albert Edwards, born in 1863. He was raised by the family of Joseph Hyde. Rather than focus on Joseph Hyde, I would focus on Elizabeth Edwards. She was no longer living with her parents by 1861, so where was she? Career options were limited, but she was working somewhere near where Joseph Hyde was in 1863. We don’t know what her relationship was with her family after her first pregnancy, but unfortunately she may have found it difficult to find work after that. If unable to rely on her family, she would have been at risk and may have ended up in a workhouse. In 1865, she was jailed for two weeks for trying to conceal her second pregnancy. There would have been pressure on her at that time to name the father. There will be more legal records associated with this. Elizabeth’s christening was 22 Aug 1844 in Withington, Herefordshire. She was most likely born a few days before she was christened – this information should be useful for finding her in later records, as I hope someone will.

      • My name is Charles Hyde, I wasn’t raised close with my Dad’s side of the family. I’d really just like to see if I can trace back my family tree. I am from cullman AL area. My granddad was also Charles Hyde.

        • Charles – I sent an email to you. Was hoping to post information for several people but am dealing with the aftermath of some frozen pipes. New posts coming ASAP.

  • Hello!
I am researching western NY Hydes – my 3rd greatgrandmother Eliza (Hyde) Green, 1805-1896, daughter of Josephus (1781-1860) and Sophia (Mead) Hyde (1792-1857). Eliza and Hiram lived in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, NY and are buried at Elton Cemetery, Cattaraugus County, NY. Josephus and Sophia lived at Pike, Wyoming County, NY, and are buried at Pike Cemetery.

Things are fuzzier after that but I THINK Josephus’s parents were Joseph (1756-1834) and Susannah (Moore) Hyde, and THAT Joseph’s parents were Joseph (1727-1786) and Naomi (Alderman) Hyde. I think both of these Josephs were born in CT. I do know that the Joseph born in 1756 is a Revolutionary War patriot documented by both the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, and I am a DNA match with one of his descendants

And this is where I’ve come to a full stop. Is anyone else researching these particular Hydes?

    • I am also researching this line! I registered Joseph “the soldier” with the SAR through Josephus & Sophia and their son, Samuel P. Hyde (my ancestor). My theory is that Joseph (Sr.) was born in Canterbury CT (bapt. 1727), moved to Simsbury CT/Southwick MA around the time of the Rev. War, then to Hampton, New York. I found some family records that incorrectly identify Joseph from Newton, MA (b. 1714) as the father, but perhaps correctly identify a brother “John Hyde 2nd” (born Southwick 1758), who changed his name to “2nd” because his cousin was also John Hyde (he went by “Maj. John Hyde”) Both John Hydes married daughters of Zenas Wheeler (Lois to the elder, and Azubah to the younger) so the name appendages seem appropriate (they were cousins and also brothers-in-law). The Hyde Genealogy (Reuben Hyde Walworth) indicates Joseph was from “Canterbury” and that is consistent with the cousin relationship of the two John Hydes from New Marlboro, MA.: James Hyde from Canterbury CT was the father of Ebenezer Hyde (father of Maj. John Hyde), and also the father of Joseph Hyde, the likely father of John Hyde 2nd. Trouble is, I cannot find birth records to support my theory. It is possible, that Joseph Hyde (Sr.) had a different mother than Ebenezer. I found records showing that James Hyde from Canterbury, CT married Mary Utter, and they had two sons named James. The baptism record for Joseph Hyde lists parents as James Hyde and Sarah Gibbons (var. sp.) but it is not clear which James (father or son…?), nor if James & Sarah were married. I am still working on this part! The marriage to Naomi Alderman is also mysterious. She is listed as “single” in the book “Aldermans in America” but Susannah Moore-Hyde died at the home of her son named “John Alderman Hyde” so it seems to connect him to Naomi’s father John Alderman. I don’t have a death record for Naomi, but my theory about her is that she died shortly after giving birth to John Hyde 2nd, and the family split ways (John moved to New Marlboro, and Joseph stayed in Southwick, MA).

      • I have been trying to find out what became of Joseph Hyde Sr, b. 1727. Did he move to the Hampton, NY with his son Joseph Jr, b. 1756? Is he buried in that area? I found some information (on MyHeritage) that a Joseph Hyde married a Eunice Gilbert in Southwick, MA in 1771 and wonder if that could be a second marriage of Joseph Sr’s?
I am descended from Joseph Jr and his son David Walker Hyde who moved to Wisconsin.

    • I am in SAR under Joseph Hyde (Susannah Moore) you likely go back to Jonathan Hyde b 1626 on the early settlers of Newton Mass monument..I think we have talked on the dna site in common. I am downline from his son Dr. John Alderman Hyde of Youngstown NY buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard there…Steve Hyde below is also researching your Hyde’s . He is a SAR officer and a good contact for you to find out more.

  • Interesting that you just posted this just a couple weeks ago. I too have been recently looking for in my Hyde lineage! I see Debra Cagwin as contributor on familysearch.org. So, you likely already know that Joseph and Naomi are linked to parents there. Are you trying to verify those connections?

I am Eliza Hyde’s 5th great grandson. More recently, my grandfather Lynch grew up in Wyoming county.

    My DNA is on 23andme

    • Brendan, Steve and I have been working on this and should have something up soon. The first Great Awakening (ballpark of 1735 -1755) led to fairly significant records loss, mainly because non-Congregationalist records could not be filed with town officials as was customary. New Lights ministers often traveled and were not always able to keep complete records of marriages and baptisms they performed. Identifying the issue and finding ways to work around it has been challenging, but we should have something out before long.

  • I’m looking for any info of my 4x great grandmother Alice Hyde born about 1779 in County Antrim, Ireland. She had at least 1 son James Lynn born about 1801 Antrim County, Northern Ireland and 1 daughter with Mr Lynn (first name is unknown). She died in Ireland.

  • Hello Fellow Hydes, I feel silly asking what might be a very basic question. The only hard core evidence I have of my Hyde ancestory is from a Hyde family bible. It starts with a John Henry Hyde, b. 12/21/1950 born in Alabama to a Hartwell and Sarah Hyde of Montgomery, AL. There is speculation that Hartwell’s parents were a Stephen and Leah Hyde of Grant Parish, LA, but there is no information on their birth dates or birth locations. So, I cannot say if this information about Stephen and Leah is even correct. Does anyone have any helpful information on this Hyde line? I did not see Louisiana as a Hyde “line” on this website. Although the name Hartwell does lend to the Richard Hyde/Mildred Hartwell of VA and NC. I just can’t seem to find the information to connect the dots. Thanks! Kathleen Rockenstein (Hyde decendent)

  • To be specific, does anyone have any information on Hartwell Hyde b.1826 Autauga County, AL. Died 1905 in Winnfield, LA. I am trying to find out who was his father. Thank you.

  • Does anyone know if there is any validity to the recent information on Ancestry website linking Hartwell Hyde (b. 1826 Autauga, AL) to Stephen Hyde (b. 1790 North Carolina/ d. 1829 Alabama) to Stephen Hyde (b. 1750 Anson North Carolina/ d. 1840 South Carolina)???

  • I haven’t seen the record to which you are referring but would be glad to do so if you can provide a link.
Stephen Hyde b. c. 1750 who married Susannah Colson Fanning, was the son of David Hyde of Northampton County, NC. Stephen was born in Virginia (either Prince George or Brunswick County depending on the date of his birth). David moved from Prince George to Brunswick in 1751 and then into Northampton County in 1759. Stephen married
Susannah Colson Fanning (the widow of Richard Fanning) about 1776 and they lived in Anson County, NC, near her family who had moved to Anson County from Northampton County. His son Stephen was born between 1785 and 1790 in Anson County and lived there until 1815. Stephen Sr.died in Anson County before 1810.

Stephen Jr. was too old to be the Stephen Hyde who was enumerated in Pickens County, SC, in the 1830 census and who was born about 1804 in South Carolina. Likewise, Stephen Jr. of Anson County was living there in 1815 (tax records) adjacent to his mother, so while he may have later moved to South Carolina or Alabama, he had not done so before 1815. Hope that helps.

  • Thanks, Lisa. 🙂 I will see if I can gather more info today. Everything you say has been helpful, and I appreciate your reply.

  • My Grandmother on my Dads side was Vera Vesta Hyde.(1893-1967) Her father was Joshua Squire Hyde (April 10,1849 -April 26,1916). I believe his father was Benjamin J. Hyde .

    • I hope that you have read the recent work on “William Hyde b. 1775-1843 SC and Beyond” on Hyde Family Lines which includes your family line. While you have yourself in the correct lineage, we believe that Joshua (sometimes spelled Joshuaway) Squire Hyde (a carpenter turned farmer) was the son of Benjamin J. Hyde’s brother Squire and his wife Eliza Ann Milligan (often mistranscribed as Milloy/Millay). You may want to read this work using a Chrome browser as there are some display issues at the moment using Microsoft Edge.

  • My late wife’s mother was a Hyde and I’ve found a handwritten lineage of Ruth Todd Hyde that goes back to William Hyde who came to America in 1633 and died 1681. A text shows written branches that mostly go back to the early to mid 1600s. It seems like this might be good for your group to have. Is there a way I can scan it to someone?

  • still looking for anything on John Henry Hyde born about 1822 in England who married Mary Malcolm of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland

  • I am looking for the parents of Thomas H Hyde. He was born in Illinois around 1842. He lived in Osceola Missouri for around 20 years. He had two sons with Susan Dunlap. He died after 1920 in Gasconade Missouri. I would love to know more about him if anybody knows anything. Thank you for your help.

    • I struck out on finding him prior to his marriage to Susan in either Illinois or Missouri. I believe that Susan’s maiden name may have been Taylor and her first marriage was to Samuel Dunlap. Census records are inconsistent on the location of his parent’s births – 1900 census in St. Clair County, Missouri, has father born Illinois and mother born England. 1910 census for Gasconade County, Missouri has both parents born in England. You will also note inconsistencies in records about the marital status between Thomas and Susan – it was fairly common back then for those who had divorced or separated to report that they were widowed or single. Hope that gives you something to go on.

  • Hello,
I am looking for information regarding the family of a John Hyde born 11 Aug., 1826 in County Cork, Ireland to his parents, John Hyde and Margarete Hyde. Not sure if this helps but he later married an Isabelle McCann Hyde who was from New York. He died in Terre Haute, IN USA on 20 Aug. 1903.

  • I am descended from Thomas Robert Hyde, Sr., born about 1808 in South Carolina and died in 1870 in Floyd County, Georgia. The family story is that he was an architect or contractor and was involved in the construction of the Georgia capital building when the capital was in Milledgeville, Georgia. His granddaughter (my grandmother) visited there in the 1970s and found his name on the cornerstone, although at this point I am not convinced it was his name but perhaps that of a related person. I have contacted a couple of different historical groups in Milledgeville about names on the capital cornerstone but have not been successful in getting a reply. One related piece of information I have found is a “Hyde Brothers” listed on the 1865 IRS Tax Assessment list for Sumter County, Georgia, showing them as Builders/Contractors. He is my brick wall but am wondering if he may be from one of the North Carolina Hyde lines. I am interested in any insight someone could offer on this ancestor. Thanks so much!
